Favorite/least favorite thing about our home — the quirks. Sometimes when a home has been around for years and years, it ends up as a hodgepodge of every previous owner’s taste and different iterations of change. Due to this, we have some strange layouts and oddities.

Take our bedroom for example, we get incredible light in our bedroom. Most of our bedroom walls are lined with windows. Said windows came with (beautiful) plantation shutters already installed. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the plantation shutters. However, it leaves us with only one wall in which our bed can be placed.

Now this is where things get quirky. There is little to no room on either side of our bed for nightstands. I tirelessly scoured the internet for slim nightstands, but nothing piqued my fancy. In true Franks’ DIY fashion, we ultimately decided to make custom nightstands for this awkward space.

These guys were SO easy. We purchased two longs planks of hobby wood from Home Depot. We cut them down to size, and pieced them together with construction screws. One tip would be to add trim to any rough exposed edges. We liked the raw, farmhouse look (shoutout to our queen, Joanna Gaines), but added some trim to the front of the nightstands to give it a finished look.

We also didn’t do any poly on these pieces to keep it a bit more raw. These are so easy, and perfect for awkward spaces. It’s a great way to make an awkward space more functional, and without a hefty price tag!
